Maths

The National curriculum states that:

“Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.”

Intent

At Broomfields Junior School we think Maths is magnificent! Mathematical teaching and learning here reflects that maths happens all around us in real life. We recognise and value the importance of a well- rounded Maths curriculum which every child can access at their individual starting point. We fully embrace and understand that every child has differing learning styles and needs and within the subject of Maths it is imperative that every child is developed, enriched and challenged within the mathematics lesson.

We have designed our Maths curriculum to help each child throughout their learning journey through carefully planning the sequence of lessons year on year with a strong focus on the CPA approach. Our sequencing follows the White Rose Hub Planning scheme and in addition to this we envelop cross curricular mathematical learning opportunities for the children to help make their learning “stick.”

The CPA approach has three stages:

  • Concrete is the ‘doing’ stage, using concrete objects to solve problems. It brings concepts to life by allowing children to handle physical objects themselves.
  • Pictorial is the ‘seeing’ stage, using representations of the objects involved in maths problems. This stage encourages children to make a mental connection between the physical object and abstract levels of understanding.
  • Abstract is the ‘symbolic’ stage, where children are able to use abstract symbols to model and solve maths problems.

We firmly believe that through teaching Mathematics in this way, it embeds a good and thorough understanding of all of the concepts taught. It allows the children to build upon their previous experiences and gives them opportunities to recall and build upon these facts and their own mathematical thoughts.

Implementation

At Broomfields we follow the Mastery approach as this enables all learners to extend and push their own understanding without setting a ‘ceiling’ on their learning. Through the use of carefully planned questioning and activities the children are given the opportunity to develop further and also where necessary consolidate previous learning.

Every day, children participate in maths activities that promote fluency, reasoning, investigation and problem solving. We learn most when we learn through investigation and problem solving using the CPA approach. Maths learning spans the whole school curriculum so that our children can be found unravelling the mysteries of the Egyptian and Roman number system, utilising their number skills weighing ingredients to make bread and tasty biscuits through to becoming entrepreneurs developing their own enterprise.

Impact

The impact of our learning process for mathematics is clear to see when setting foot inside our classrooms. Here at Broomfields Junior School we are developing fluent, independent and resilient learners. Rather than simply 'teaching to the test' and providing children with the mere basics in mathematics we take the time to deepen children's conceptual understanding and give them the opportunity to apply their learning in real life contexts.

The philosophy that no child is ever left behind in their learning runs throughout our school. By using the White Rose small steps documents staff are able to go back and unpick children's misconceptions of a mathematical concept allowing all children to remain on track with their learning.

We believe that learning is for life and the teaching and learning that is in place is there to set every child up with the appropriate foundations of mathematics but also a love for everything that is maths. Maths is everywhere and most of all maths is fun! We endeavour to share the beauty of maths and its importance in our world.

Key Maths Documents

Our Maths Policy, Calculation Policy and Progression Document give a clear basis for learning in our school.  They detail the calculation methods that we use at each stage of your child's education with us.  They share our vision, inlcuding our intent, implementation and impact

Statutory Assessments

Times Tabels

Alongside the statutory assessments in Year 6, children in Year 4 will now be tested on their times table knowledge.  This will be completed on an online programme.  We have invested in Number Sense to encourage times table fluency.  The more challenges they complete, not only the better their times table knowledge will be, but the more confident your child will become in maths.

Click on the link below to find out more about .Number Sense.

The children will learn the 36 key times tables facts to support with their times table knowledge.  You can practise these with your child to help them with their knowledge.
